
Our second oldest son participated in the Elbert/Douglas County Livestock Association's Catch-A-Calf steer project/program. As part of the project, he had to actually catch a roping calf in front of hundreds of people attending the Elbert County Fair. Once caught, he had to put a halter on him and lead him to the stock trailer.

The requirements of the program is to raise a calf to grown size (starting about 600 lbs to finishing about 1200 lbs). Participants must attend monthly meetings where they learn about their steer, how to raise and manage them, the beef industry, etc. Each participant has a sponsor and a mentor. The sponsor supports the participant financially by buying the steer. The mentor provides additional help with handling and checking on the state of the animal. The participants must write a letter to their sponsor by the first of each month in the program to provide status on their project and to reiterate their gratitude to the sponsor.
